Bathtub Refinishing Mesquite TX
Last week I refinished a bathtub for a couple that had actually hired the bathtub to be painted with epoxy paint just weeks before by another refinisher. UPDATE: 1/12/2023- (I remember this job well) I would also like to note I have never been called back so my coating worked! I wish I could tell them with exact accuracy why the coating failed. I wasn't there, so for me to say anything would only be an educated guess. One of two things happened for it to fail like it did since the couple allowed it more than enough time to cure. Either whoever did the tub just did not know the process or possibly did not care how it turned out. Another very real solution may be the supplier exaggerated how great the coating was! This happens a lot and when you combine that with inexperience or willful ignorance this is the result. I mean no disrespect to whoever did this so please don't think I am calling them ignorant, I mean it in the true sense of the word... just not knowing. Sales reps that work for some supply companies will sometimes over hype the products they sell (which is why I constantly test coatings in a controlled environment). In the past I have had suppliers tell me the coating is so great it goes on without any bonding agents! They said this coating has anti-sag agents and will not run, you can spray it directly to a clean surface... everything a refinisher wants to hear because they can save over $100 quart on boding agents and they think we can save the money for etching solution (about $70) plus the time for etching which is about 30 minutes. Also the secondary epoxy bonding agent (about $150 a gallon can be saved). I mean if you are in the refinishing business this is huge savings, less product to carry and the process just simplified by 300%! So did I purchase a gallon? Absolutely! However, I tested it on a 9 X 9 tile in my garage before it went to any customer. I cleaned the brand new tile just as they said and gave it 3 days longer to dry than was required. I used a razor to try to get under the coating and it held up ... not extremely well.. however it passed. I was excited! Now for the real test though .. water! That is right, water is the ultimate test. I only soaked it for an hour in warm water that had cooled to cold within about 45 minutes. (normally I test in 180 - 212 (F) water and soak overnight as it cools) It peeled off in huge strips! As I was peeling It I thought "I have had band aids stick better"! What if I took them at their word and within 3 to five days had that on between 8 - 10 tubs and showers... that is a very scary thought! I lost about $200 on that gallon plus disposal fees and for me that is called "continued education". Which is terrible.. and I never say an unkind word or leave a bad review, the truth is most refinishers are afraid to because of revenge. However, I knew not to ever do business with that supplier again! Yes.. they are still in business and still making the same claims. I would like to add I did not rely on just one test... I did 4 with such similar results using the word exact results would not be unfair! So, I still don't know exactly what happened... however.. The video is below.

Dallas Bathtub Refinishing Services
As you can see there some mistakes made when they painted the bathtub. However, you can also see how easy it was to simply pull the paint off in large sheets.
Although this is one of the first times I actually filmed this it is something I see on a monthly basis. On everyone of these that has happened the customer always says it was the epoxy paint kit purchased from a local hardware store. I will be the first to admit this one was the easiest I have removed in a very long time and to be fair I even show and explain in the video that soap residue was found under the old paint. However, I have seen more than my share of these failures were the bathtub is extremely clean.
I'm glad the homeowners called me before the paint started crumbling and going down the drain! That is another expense that just doesn't need to happen.

Professional vs. D.I.Y.
Please don't confuse the Dallas Bathtub Refinishing restoration methods with the epoxy paint kits sold in the store. I have even seen websites that claim the cost of a professional to refinish a bathtub is about $50.00. That website knows nothing about bathtub refinishing. Back when I first started my refinishing business in 1991 that price would be very true. In those days we did Apartment and Hotel bathtub and tile painting and we used epoxy paint because it was the only go to coating that was available. We knew it was going to last about 1 year and so did the customers but they would give us 8 or 9 jobs a day and we painted these tubs and then as time went on we were just going in a big circle! Painting bathtubs that had been painted just 6 months before in most cases and since the lease term was 6 months and there was a high turn around in apartments it was just simply part of the process.
Even when the better coatings were available the apartments still wanted the epoxy because they had to work off a budget that was given to them by the corporate office and that budget was based off the money spent the year before.

Residential grade refinishing is nothing like Apartment grade
There is time frame each year usually around September when we see a new refinishing professional pop up in the DFW area. This is because the Apartment industry slows down toward the end of the year as the budget runs low and they try to hold off on whatever they can until the first of the year when the budget renews again.
There is a huge difference between residential quality refinishing and Apartment grade refinishing.
Apartment grade is something I personally don't offer. I have in the past to compete with the professionals offering very low prices. However, I no longer offer that and have not for a while now. When I refinish a bathtub It is residential quality and it is going to last. I refinish with a bathtub restoration procedure that is a synergistic process so each step builds on the prior step and it is a crucial step in the final application.
